The Common Problem of the Head of Product

Product Management Challenges:

The product team comes up with the Idea and gives the requirements to UX designers and engineering. The Engineering team builds the feature. However, when released, there is no customer adoption of the feature.
The reason is Product Team decided on the feature without any customer research and no customer validation.
The Product team is internally focused and works with the engineering team. More time is spent on the engineering aspects of the product than on strategic aspects. This leads to building products that have low customer satisfaction and very low adoption.

  • Product Management Challenge No. 1: Building Products without customer research and customer validation.

On the contrary, if more time is spent on strategic aspects: Understanding customer needs and problems, Market research, Competition analysis and then building MVP and then validating MVP with potential early adopter category of customers. This will lead to building customer-centric products and ultimately high customer satisfaction.

  • Product Management Challenge No. 2: Product Managers spend less time in Strategic activities and more time in Technical activities working internally with the engineering team and discussing solutions rather than meeting customers and analyzing competitors.
Lesson: Spend more time on strategic aspects than technical aspects of product management.
